Best way to ask about temporary to permanent position?

I've been working for a few months at a school as a network administrator. I actually work for a consulting firm/technology temp agency so I'm not directly employed by the school. A few weeks ago, my current supervisor asked me to apply for the permanent position of the job I'm currently working in. Multiple people, including supervisors, have said that they think I'm doing a really good job.

So here's my question: how should I go about asking them when they plan to make a decision about the position? They haven't interviewed me yet, but I really don't know if they plan to. My current contract is up at the end of February and I need to make plans as far as housing and issues of getting settled.

To clarify: I applied the day I was asked to. I just haven't really heard anything about it since. I'm getting the impression that they don't have anybody else lined up and chances are pretty good I'll get the job.

I guess I don't understand your problem. If your current supervisor asked you to apply, then why wouldn't you? You don't want a permanent position?

Apply first, then, ask when they'll make their decision. Let them also know that it's urgent that you know by the end of February and about the other issues.
