What is the role of a man in the 21st century??

As a man (32 years old & single) I don't know where I fit in anymore. The traditional role that a man used to play seems to have all but diminished with the blending/overlapping in today's 'equal opportunity' western society eg. The provider - not anymore, women are earning their own living; The defender of the family - well these days 'self defence' = criminal conviction and I even note a recent episode of Dr Phil where his wife spoke of an occasion where her mother had to defend her home against 2 would-be intruders; Father - well certainly not at conception, with modern technology/spem banks etc; Listener/support - again modern technology such as the internet seems to have taken over that; Sex - now on a lesser scale?
You only have to consult the personal columns in papers or total up all the love songs written by men to notice that women seem OK on their own. At a dance class I have been attending, there are now more men than women - case closed. I guess I'm just not required

Any woman that wants to be the equal of a man lacks ambition. Primitive cultures allowed women a separate but equal status unless they were given the final vote,(ie.American Indians could go to war even if the women didn't agree {men die in war women suffer} but when you came back you could find your stuff outside and you were divorced; period. Men had to go through 4 counsels to get approval and these sort of standards applied to most cultures, though it seems that hunting and fighting were all that men were good for. Other than fighting for who knows what reason (other than IMHO to provide a niche for themselves) yeah, men aren't as dominant as they were and things are becoming more egalitarian.
