How much should I ask for?

I have been contacted by a company (that I know nothing about) that wants me for a Marketing Analyst or Business Development position. They are an Inc. 500 company, and specialize in software development and consultation. I called back to get more information and was asked how much I was looking for salary wise. I said I didn't know, but she asked again saying she needed a range.

I've always been taught to not sell yourself short, and to start high and work down from there. So I took into account what my friends who graduated this spring with me are making and said 25-30 thousand a year. Granted I don't know anything about the company and what they can offer. She replied with "That's something we can negotiate, as we wouldn't be able to offer that much."

So I'm wondering when I go for my interview and this question inevitably comes up again, what should I say?

-I'm a recent college grad
-I have only a little experience in the field

Thanks!

Again, they wouldn't give me their range, they wanted to know what I was looking for...

I like the idea that you are interviewing the company also. How straightforward they are with you will be an indication of how you will be dealt with as an employee. Don't be dazzled by a job title. Do your homework and see what entry level(or similar) positions are paid by comparable companies. Base your salary request on what you are able to learn about the position prior to your interview. Often times human resources will want to see how much you value yourself as a possible asset to their business. Good Luck!

WOW..you went to college only make 25k...maybe you should ask them what is THEIR range for the position.

Hello,

That sort of position makes me think of a 100 k plus type salary. Living here in Canada for many years and working for some American companies, we often found they liked to hand out big titles or names but little money for the work and responsibility you had. For example my direct boss in the oil patch had the title, " Director of Hyrocarbon Well Logging Operations - Western Canada Division... impressive but he made less than a roughneck. My title was Crew Chief and I was payed even less than him.

We left for a much better offer and they told my boss - but you are our upcoming shining light and right arm!
" Thanks but we can't live on compliments we said!"

Anyway in my 50 plus years I was always told what salary ranges were before even applying for a position so I am a little skeptica for you.

Cheers,

Michael Kelly

She said: "they won't be able to offer that much." Well then, what is their offer? And you should ask exactly that. Then you can decide if it's right for you or not. Remember this, not only are they interviewing you, but you are interviewing them as well. People forget that fact. Once given the figure let them know you'll think about it and get back to them if offered the position. That way you can decide if you even want to work for them. Do some research on the internet about the company and that position from other companies. Best to you and welcome to the working world.
