Will a position in QA with a game company help me further my career in software development?

I have been offered a position with Javaground (a mobile game development company ) as a game tester. Currently I am pursuing a Computer Science and Engineering Degree.

I am debating whether to take the offer or leave.

I currently work in quality control at a disk duplication company(i check cds and remove any damaged ones).

If i take the game tester position i have to take a paycut for the 1st three months. This is the biggest issue. If this position would help me further my career in software development I will definitely take it.

anyways, will a position in QA help me further my career in software development? Will it look good on a resume?

The paycut will be hard, but it sounds like this job may have other benefits. If you're interested in working in gaming, it's really great to already have contacts in the industry.

In any case, QA is closer to your likely career goals than what you're doing now. If I were hiring a new CS graduate, I'd definitely prefer one who's had some experience in the difficult world of QA over somebody with no software experience.

I say that taking the job is going to be trial and error. It may or may not help further your career because you probably don't even know what you will end up doing. As for right now, you might think about keeping your degree your priority, and working on stuff that keeps your time management efficient, and keeps you fed... once you have the degree, you will find that you could qualify for jobs like the gaming one for a much higher pay... or, you might even want to further your education even MORE so that your income increases even more.... worth more thought, i think....

From the sound of your current job it sounds like the QA job would be much more relevant to your degree and can only help. Since you are still in college, the experience will be much more valuable then the extra pay.
