Java 2 Software Development Kit, Student (JDK)?

Can Someone Help with Java

I downloaded Java 2 Software Development Kit, Student Edition V, 1.4.2 for an assignment I have to do. I have no ideal how to use Java. I didn鈥檛 see where it has downloaded on the system, because there is no icon when I go to All Programs or should there be one. There is the Sun Download Manager but no Java icon, when I go Verify Java Version it's saying I have the right version downloaded. So I know it has downloaded on the system, but what happen to the icon for Java. Is Java something I suppose to type in or is it a program I should have on my system to use with Notepad or something/ Can anyone help me understand how to use Java.

Thanks

Were you supposed to write a program for your assignment, or run a program?

The Java Development Kit (JDK) is a set of tools for writing programs. It won't add a lot of icons because that's not really how it's used. Your java programs were probably stored in a directory like c:\Program Files\Java\jdk1.6.0_03\ (at least on a Windows system) Look in the bin directory, and you'll see a few other programs, notably java.exe and javac.exe. These are the programs you use to run a java program and to create one.

Generally it's easiest to use a dedicated editor to create and run your Java programs.

I recommend Eclipse for my students: http://www.eclipse.org.
It is a large download, and can be a little tricky to install, but it's very powerful and helps a lot with your coding.

I also like drJava ( http://www.drJava.org ) It's a smaller, cleaner editor, made for students.

With these editors, you can press a 'run' button and the code you write will be automatically compiled and run.

Still, knowing how to write code is not a trivial skill. It will take some practice.
