Best computer for the job?

I was wondering if you were going to write algorithms and do web design/programming, as well as software development currently what would be the best computer to buy in order to do this and also s it more of a computer consideration or a software consideration?

None of the applications you described are particularly intensive, so you'd probably be fine with almost any workstation. Bear in mind that Visual Studio and Eclipse (if you plan to use either of those) are memory hogs, so consider getting over 1 GB RAM if you're on XP or over 2 GB RAM if you're on Vista. Other than that, don't really have any pointers for you.
