How to get into .NET?

I'm looking for some advice as to how to progress my career in software development. My backgound is that I completed a degree in Business and IT around 4 years back. I had a university placement job that I returned to after my degree where I was in data production. My main duties were automating data processing tasks in SQL server and MS Access and I was never given to oportunity to move into development, although that was the direction i wanted to take. I also have a couple of years experience in building systems in Access using VBA. The systems were both accounting systems and as a VBA developer my job was to design, build and maintain systems from scratch.

I also have a little experience using VB.NET from my previous job and have been doing a lot of studying in my spare time around the areas of VB.NET, systems design and object orientation.

Moving into .NET represents going into "proper" dev for me and I feel I have a good foundation to build on, where should i go from here?

You already have a good start. Search for algorithms in .net on Microsoft site. I remember seeing MSDN articals on algorithm using dotNet. That will be a great place to understand programming and programming language. In this case I am talking C#. This language is so much in use that if you know this lanugage you will have lots of doors open. Including windows and web programming. I will suggest you to look in to Visual Studio pages on MSDN. There are tons of free tutorials and articals on that site. You will need no other place to go learn anything, and all is free.
