Specifically software or programming languages to make an instant messaging program. I am trying to start development of a instant messaging program so I am wondering what languages, software, etc can i use to start this particular project? What was used in programs like MSN and Yahoo, AIM...

I am trying to create a program that is downloadable and can run on the desktop. Problem is, i have no idea what programming language to use for such a thing. i want it to be a messaging program, most likely open source but it helps to have some kind of base to start from so anyone can help?
