Reasons are obvious..
1) Java is strictly platform independent.
2)Java is dynamic
3)Java is more secured(cos uses concept of JVM)
4)Java/container supports multithreading
5)Lower development cost.
6)Servlets/JSP has better options then CGI
8)Web server application(like apache) has lower implemetaion costs then counterpart Windows server.

9) Last but not the least is...Java come under open source programing paridgm which is really appreciable.It helps developers to grow thr knowledge with this opensocieties resources. Unlike,Microsoft which asks big n give big hole in your pocket.

I personally feel Java is better option ,success of mozila tells the whole tale.Yet * .Net +Java together would be the future in software developement.

Sun spent a fortune marketing java. Their marketing events were actually quite preposterous.

Despite this Java is used almost only in Web applications. Even here you are more likely to fijnd browser plugins than Java.

The main reason people choose Java is that is is browser and platform independent, and can be deployed over the Internet.

Its disadvantages are that it is slow, prone to memory leaks and crashes a lot.

Applications built using JAVA are platform friendly, it means it will runs in both Open Source and Windows desktops and servers. Deploying and Testing the application is not a headache compare to .NET platforms which runs only in Windows.
