Is Computer Science and Law a good mix?

I have a computer science degree and 6 years of software development experience and was considering career change. I've done some reading and I feel like getting a law degree would be advantageous since I have a background in computing technology. I am not really interested in patent law but I think I would be interested in policy development related to computing technology (net neutrality ...). Plus I think with the global economy software developers maybe a dime a dozen

It is no better than a degree in English or any other subject matter. I had a degree in CS, was director of IT and went back to get a law degree. The recruiters for the law schools all said that CS and Law would be a winner for a job. IT WAS NOT. The only thing that my CS degree and experience did was to allow me to understand how to do legal research online.

If anything the CS experience hurt me. Potential employers saw a pretty high salary, my 10 years experience, and that I had climbed a corp. ladder, as a detriment to being hired as a lowly (go get the coffee) associate. You won't believe this but many law firms still religate any computer work to the secretarial, clerical, paralegal areas. Having a computer background, to these firms, is like knowing shorthand.

I worked as an independant contractor attorney for a firm where the Sr. Partner called me in and insisted that I write out my briefs in long hand on a yellow lined pad and give it to the secretary, instead of using her computer after hours.

Sorry, but you should know what you to expect before you invest in the law degree. THAT BEING SAID, I would not trade my law degree for anything. As a computer person I was expected to work alone and to find my own answers. While that is not how those biggie law firms work, it is exactly how a solo attorney works. I found that my computer training has really helped when I opened up my own firm. I do not write anything out long hand, I do my own online research, and keep up with the latest legal software. Because of this knowledge and willingness to have a very computerized office I can go up against bigger firms and win, for a lot less money.

Bottom line is if you want to be an attorney, do it now, but do not expect your business experience or degree to help in any way. Good luck.

if ur not interested in patent law then not worth your time.

good choice. And international computer law
