How large is the PHP software development sector? How much money is used for PHP software development?

Both links below will provide you with usage statistics/popularity. In terms of money, I'm not sure there's an answer to your question. Some companies use PHP, some don't. The one I work for does, with hundreds of PHP developers, and I'm paid very well :)

We at Yahoo! use PHP extensively. It's quite hot in Silicon Valley. The contracting agency I used to work for before Yahoo! was trying extremely hard to find qualified PHP engineers in the area, but never could find enough. I'd say it's quite a good language to master, especially if you are on either of the coasts.
