I have a desktop computer; do I really need a laptop?

In the fall, I will start a certificate program for Computer Information:Software Development(I have a degree, but it's been many, many, moons since I was in a full time program). I have a desktop, so I'm wondering; do I really need a laptop too. I'm running WindowsXP Professional, with a 250G drive and Wordperfect Office 12, floppy drive, CD and DVD(dual layer) read/write, scanner, printer and a ton of other stuff.
I need advice. Especially from those familiar with software student requirement, must-haves, and tips.

Yes, if you are going to be mobile then you need a laptop. Your desktop would be fine if you plan on only keeping your computer in your room in halls.

Not unless you like carrying a laptop around...I never did. I used notebooks and wrote down notes and used the computer lab at school until I got home...I never carried a cellphone either and did just fine...it's up to you...You don't have to have a laptop...

I'm currently in the CIS program and a laptop is a must for me. When I do homework I can take it anywhere I go and turn it in instantly in class with a thumb drive. The best thing about it is I do my homework in class most of the time while professor whoever is babeling on about how computers have changed in the last five minutes. I'm almost done with my degree and I'm on my second laptop. I don't think I would have done as well without it.

Well you are asking yourself the right question.I mean you do not need a laptop for anything else then work and in some rear cases entertainment!I guess you desktop isn't very old,so if you aren't traveling because your work and if your desktop is working fine and then you really don't a laptop.

That depends on where and how you plan to work. If you can benefit from gathering information / sharing data in the field, or taking time between classes to get some homework done, or even just getting out of the house to think, then you should consider getting one. Today's laptops are plenty of computer for what you used to think of as desktop work, and can serve as your primary machine.

Ask your instructor how his students typically use their laptops (and whether it does them any good).
