I have a B.A. in Political Science - how can I break into the IT field?

I received my B.A. from a very highly respected university and would prefer not to have to get another bachelor's degree. I'm interested in software development and am hoping to somehow get my foot in the door and learn on the job. Is this possible? If so, how? If not, what is the fastest way for me to enter the field without going back to school full time? I'm 32 and don't want to be eating Ramin noodles again!

You do NOT need another degree. A 4-year degree plus cert will be fine.

look up DeVry, ITT, etc - two year software programming or network administrative programs.

You'll need A+ certification, Cisco Certification, and MSCE certification to make any real money

I agree with Michale F. in that you will have to get some coursework on different languages and models to get up to speed. However you will not have to get another B.A. or B.S. I would start by taking some courses at night at a local community college. Make an appointment to meet with a Career Counselor at a local community college. They are usually available to meet with people from the the local community to help design a plan. It make take a little longer than full time school, but it is manageable.

Most employers are looking form a set of skills not a major. You probably have developed some analytical and people skills that will put you above the traditional age IT majors. You simply need to get up to speed on the technical stuff.

Please do not worry about being 32. I am a career counselor myself and about half of the people I work with are adults who are re-careering. The average person changes careers three time during the course of their lives these days. See how you can make it work for you. Good Luck!
