Where do I start?

I am interested in learning software development. Where should I start? I do not want to go to a school for it. I know alot about computers and where to find the learning materials. Just need to know where to start what to learn 1st? Thank you

Start with Borland Delphi absolutely best choice for beginners

No one programming language is best for every job, so eventually you'll want to master several so you can choose the right one for any given task.

For now, I'd go with one of the languages that is available for free online, like Python or PHP, and get a quality book on how to use it (the O'Reilly "Learning..." and "Cookbook" series are particularly good.

Learn a methodology along with the language, so you've got a grasp on proper work-flow and design, in addition to the actual structure and commands of a language. A good one is Extreme Programming.

If you're going to delve into web programming, then you'll also want to learn HTML, CSS (stylesheets), and SQL. MySQL is a popular (and free) server that works nicely with PHP or Python.

If you're going to go with the web programming route, then you'll want to install a web server, and SQL server, and your programming language of choice on your local computer, instead of doing everything on a remote web post. Apache and MySQL are typically installed together, along with PHP and/or Python and/or Perl.

Finally, you'll want a good development environment to work with. Some good free ones are ActiveState Komodo (for the coding) and OpenOffice Write (for the visual HTML design).
