Whats a good computer?

Hey guys,
I got a new computer for Christmas, but I might end up returning it to buy something a little bigger -- I've kind of been out of the loop for what is good these days. This is what I have:

Compaq Presario
Model# SR5130NX
Processor: AMD Athlon 64 x2 Dual-core 3800+
2.0 GHz, 512KB + 512KB L2 Cache
1024 MB RAM
200 GB Hard Disk
DVD RW Lightscribe

I don't play any games, but I do a lot of software development (Visual Studios, Borland products, Metrowerks). Obviously I'd like to maximize the performance while minimizing the cost. Any tips/suggestions/comments are appreciated!

Thanks!

Personally I would look at 2GB of DDR2 RAM and an Intel Core 2 Duo processor as intel are well known for their multi-tasking capable processors while AMD are more a gamers processor even though I am a gamer I got an intel in my new machine because I have never had an intel before and they work just as well. What about the graphics card and motherboard? Better still, why not build your own PC? I built my first one in September and it was a brilliant success :-) although i had major help from the very helpful community of this forum their helpfulness is second to none ( http://www.buildyourown.org.uk/forums/ ) They tell you parts to get and how to build it too and what not to do.

Good Luck. Hope i helped

EDIT: - works out cheaper if you build your own PC too as your not paying companies for manual labour

EDIT2: - also be sure to get a good PSU as its vital if you want to keep your machine cool aswell as CPU cooling stick to well known brands in all areas of components as the generic ones are cheap and don't last long such as a generic 600W PSU is most likely peak and will never reach that whereas a Crucial 450W is constant and not peak with the added reliablity and logetivity.

That looks pretty good. About the only thing i would add is more memory but as this provides more "bang for your buck" then it works out well for you.

If you are working with 3d modelling at all then you would probably need at least 4Gb of memory to perform at a satisfactory level.

You can probably get by with what you have but if you want to run a lot of programs at the same time then more memory is vital.

Thats good.Don't try to change your computer just go with what you have.

all computers are good, its the user that counts
