Proffesional Liability Insurance?

I am in need of some liability insurance for my freelance software development work. I am in Tennessee and I am seeking $500,000.00 worth of coverage. Can someone tell me where I can get an instant quote online? Or if there are agents that read this, can you contact me with a quote? I need to get this moving quickly.

Thanks for the reply. You will have to forgive my ignorance in this matter. I did not know I needed general liability first. I honestly don't know the difference between general and professional.

The amount I need was set by my client. If it were up to me, I wouldn't carry any. When you say I can get a policy with both attached and they usually start at $2500, is that per year? Or a one time deal?

You do need to have Commercial General Liability (CGL) in place first or at least simultaneously purchase both. Even if you have not had insurance before it is possible for a standard company to write both policies for you. I would check with Travelers Property Casualty since they have an excellent policy tailored for technology companies and they will also write the professional liability (also called e & o--errors & omissions coverage) as long as you have documented experience. You will need to provide your projected annual gross receipts, an estimate of your contents or equipment, your projected annual payroll and a copy of the standard contract you use.

The website for you to find a Travelers agent in your area is http://www.travelers.com/

You may also want to get quotes through other companies. Usually Travelers agents have more than one company available to you since they are independent agents (i.e. they are allowed to represent multiple companies) but you can also get recommendations for other independent agents through other business owners and get other agents to quote.

Good Luck

You can't get instant professional liability quotes, and you can't get any quotes at ALL, online.

AND, no one is going to give you PROFESSIONAL liabiltiy unless you also have GENERAL liability coverage in place - so the FIRST place to go, is the guy that writes your general liability coverage.

Assuming you don't have any, there are a couple surplus lines products out there that will combine general liability and professional liability (starting at $2500 premium) onto one policy. Software, though, that's a real tough line of business, you'll have more declinations than acceptances. Check with an independent agency in your area - you might have to call a few, because this will be expensive, and they'll think you are wasting their time. You can find a local independent agent through this website: www.iiaa.org

Also, asking for a half million, well most companies will charge you the same for the half mil, as they would for a full million, and any contracts you have or get will probably require a full million. So it's silly to go so low on the limit.

In my past life, I wrote small GL policies for software geeks through Zurich. In Ohio they were inexpensive, like $500-600 per year and carried coverage tailored to software geekery (coverage for malicious coding, viruses, oops I coded that coverage) as well as typical GL coverage (sorry, spilled coffee on your laptop). Check with a local agency that deals in business coverage. Good luck.
