Getting a salary increase?

I recently learned that a classmate of mine who just started with my company is getting about $15,000 more than what I am making doing software development. While he has been shopping and changing jobs since we graduated, I stayed with my present company and is not pleased to learn that an outsider is being paid more.

How should I approach this with my boss? Do I send an email, should I verify from other managers what the pay scale is, etc.

I believe loyaty should be rewarded especially then an outside candidate doesn't have any special skills and lack the domain and institutionalknowledge to justify the salary.

Please let me know what you think.

It really depends on the relationship that you have with your manager, but by no means allow your jealousy show, as it could be the end of you. Be aware that many companies consider discussion of salaries grounds for dismissal.

Do some salary research, and present your findings to your boss. Show him/her what the average pay scale is for your position, experience, and education levels. Then, factor in the length of your tenure with the company, and place yourself in an appropriate place in that range.

Also be sure to have a list of your accomplishments handy, and the resulting financial gains quantified.

I've found this to be the best way to ask for a raise. Do not use your coworkers as measures, because you'll lose.

If this does not work, look for another job and be prepared to leave for more money. Try to engage them in a salary bidding war, but again, be prepared to leave as it may not work.

threaten to quit

Have a talk with your boss. most are paid what your worth
