Somewhat complicated science research project on neuroscience (for sophmore in high school)? |
Hi. I need a science research project that I can do on the brain. I have a month (actually, maybe two or three years if I carry this over throughout high school) to actually do this, so it should be somewhat time consuming. I have tools like a spectrometer and microscope at my school. Also, some science facilities and companies around the area would be willing to help. I had to do something very similar to this when I was in high school (I actually just graduated). It seems from your description of the time limitations that this might be some sort of large and intricate project. If companies in your area are willing to help, that is certainly a good start, as it is such a rarity today. Before starting anything or even accepting one idea, I would advise that you find a mentor (as I once had to). Somebody with a PhD, or at the very least a Masters. An idea may be wonderful and inspiring, but the practical realities will limit you. A mentor would be able to better help you craft your experiment, outline realistic goals and expectations, and check or foster your advancement in one direction. Of course, you need an idea before you find a well-suited mentor. I would suggest, if you are interested in disorders, studying Autism. The occurrence of this disorder has now reached 1 in 150, and I have personal experience with children of autism. I can say that plenty of willing subjects and their parents would be available, as current research and treatment for the disease is scant despite its frequency. This can open many avenues for original research. Despite its lack of address by medical institutions, it is highly salient, due to increasing interest by the public. Hope that helps. I suggest that you find someone who is already engaged in neuroscience to see if there is anything you can do. Without a broad and deep background, it is unlikely that you will do anything useful. siezures (electrical pulses and misfires in the brain) and how they effect the brain in different regions... I like the suggestions mentioned above about finding a mentor and/or someone already involved in the field. That could be priceless. |
