In general, do civil engineers work in teams, or are they solely responsible for most projects they do?

In general, civil engineers almost always work in teams. The exception to this that I've seen is when the civil engineer either consults privately, or the firm is very small and each engineer is responsible for taking his/her projects from cradle to grave.

However, most every project will have a single project manager that does most of the administrative tasks alone. That engineer will oversee and orchestrate the efforts of the team working under him/her.

We work in teams. You do still have to be accountable for the role you play in the project.
