How do I use SPSS software for my research data?

I'm doing my research project and i'm supposed to use SPSS to handle my data but i'm clueless. My research is titled 'Female deaths due to cardiac causes: 10 years Autopsy review'. Any tips would be highly appreciated.

My research data only includes the details of females. Their age, marital status, body weight, race and the cause of death. The research is intended to figure out the most prevalent cardiac causes and the relationship between the COD and the victims based on their details taken from the autopsy reports. I don't have to compare these data with men's data as it a retrospective study and focused mainly on females.

You will need to provide more information in order facilitate a useful answer; specifically, a lot depends on what kind of information you have, and what kinds of questions you are interested in answering.

Ideally, you will have information on a fairly large number of patients. Your title indicates that you're looking at autopsy data for women who have died of cardiac disease, but hopefully you have some information on men as well in order to compare them, as well as information about the general characteristics of the patients -- age, racial and ethnic background, perhaps something on financial status or diet, anything that seems relevant.

More importantly, you need to decide what you're trying to find out. Maybe you're trying to find out what makes a woman likely to die of cardiac disease, in which case logistic regression would probably be the standard procedure. Maybe you just want to know if the women who die of cardiac disease are older than women dying of other causes, or maybe whether people in one city have higher rates of death than those in another, each of which would require a different statistical approach.

If you add more specific information, I will be able to address your problem in greater specificity.

EDIT: so it sounds like what you probably want to do is a logistic regression -- this will tell you whether the different aspects of the patient's background information makes them more likely to die of cardiac disease than of another cause.

The first thing you will want to do is create a new variable coded 1 for a cardiac death and 0 for every other (non-missing) value. This can be accomplished using the recode -- into different variables option under the "transform" menu.

Not all versions of SPSS come bundled with the capability to run logistic regressions; hopefully yours does. It is located under the Analyze -- Regression menu; it should say "binary logistic."

This is not a particularly simple procedure, and if you're not familiar with the statistics behind it you will want to consult a text book or an instructor. The basic ideas are that the coefficients produced in the regression reflect how strongly the independent variables are related to the probability of dying of cardiac disease, where higher values meaning it is more likely.
