Project vw bug advice?

i plan on buying a cheap bug that i want to try and learn as much about cars and engines as i can. unfortunately i dont have much money and i dont know what i should do. should i tear apart the engine and try and rebuild it, possibly getting stuck or too expensive, or should i just replace sections over time possibly having the car just sitting there having nothing done to it after a while. any advice is much appreciated.

Find a VW forum and study up.
Are a lot of after market and restoration parts out there. There are also still a lot of body kits for them.
It would be best if you can find a second one, and work on one at a time.
