What careers in International Relations-- details inside

Yesterday I took a tour of the university I plan on attending next year. It's a beautiful liberal arts school with lots of opportunities. I'm a dance major. However I'm looking for another major (a back up if you will, one that will give me a solid career for after age 25)

What first sparked my interest in IR is learning about the growing problems in third world countries (specifically Africa and S. America) Then, I found out one of the classes I have to take as part of the Honors College was African Civilization. I think this is the sort of thing I want to study.

But what kind of jobs can I get and what is the security and how hard is it to get into them? I don't want live internationally, but I want to occasionally travel abroad and make a decent living. I would like to do something to co-ordinate international projects maybe? Should I be looking into another major?

I have a BS in International Affairs. It can be very difficult to find a job with this degree UNLESS you're willing to move to Washington D.C. In DC there are TONS of government and government-contractor jobs that hire IR, IA and poli-sci majors. If you want to go over seas, a great way to start is to join the Peace Corps when you graduate (2 years). That will give you awesome experience and credentials to get a job at the State Department for example. Also, most government agencies that you might not expect have international/foreign policy divisions that do very interesting work (Dept. of Commerce for example).

If you want to up your chances of getting a good job, 1) get excellent grades, and 2) make sure you take a lot of courses in an in-demand foreign language (e.g. Arabic, Farsi, Urdu, Turkish, etc.).
