This site http://www.meinestadt.de/ has all the links - including tourist info and trip planning for some places - to every town in Germany, I'd say you should get about by train with a group ticket (details at http://www.db.de ) and you should include the five biggest towns: Koblenz, Mainz, Trier, Kaiserslautern, Ludwigshafen.
