Seed bank project, a great idea or further manipulation of the world by man?

Norway is proceeding with a plan to great a "Doomsday" seed project.

Is this just modern mans approach to a Noah's ark or is it going to mean man has an opportunity to interfere with normal evolutionary extinctions?

I just think it's silly. In my old city, we had a radical "save the seeds!" group. I suppose it could be important and it won't hurt, but we're nowhere near a crisis and I doubt there would be much use for any seeds that would be saved.

Oh well. At least it reminds me of Chrono Trigger.

I think it's an awesome idea. We learn so much about man by looking at what he eats. If we deliver this message into the future it will be an exciting find for someone.

Even if there is no doomsday, just technological advances that eliminate our particular diversity, preserving this biological history could potentially be a way to preserve solutions to future problems--say a disease that comes up because we've elimated some little thing from our diet--or something else we start eating too much of has the side effect of slowly destroying a certain nutrient we need that we didn't pay attention to.

500 years from now, a scientist takes out his scanner to search for sources of a gluten free substance with significant amounts of lysine and he finds that some teff has been stored in small amounts around the planet, he can potentially wipe out a disease that has been plauging the people in his time.
