Selection 1

At 5 a.m. Friday, holiday shopping madness, the 2006 edition, was well under way in Blount County.

Some shoppers looked as if they had just crawled out of bed. Others appeared to have been awake all night 鈥?Thanksgiving gravy stains still clearly visible on at least a few shirts.

They came in minivans and SUVs, pickup trucks and sports cars. They filled the parking lots and stormed the stores with sleepy-eyed children in tow.

Craig Carr, the manager of JCPenney at Foothills Mall, opened his store at 4:45 a.m. giving customers a 15 minute head start on the rest of the mall.

"It worked out well for us," Carr said. "They were lined up at the door when we unlocked."

According to Carr, the day-after-Thanksgiving business this year at JCPenney was better than last.

Angie Thompson, Blair Giles, Joy Hamblin and Cheryl Thompson pushed two overflowing shopping carts through the mall parking lot at 8:30 a.m. The group had been there since 4:15 a.m. and were finished for the day.

Maryville teenagers Jessica Keasler and Jennifer Johnson started shopping at 6 a.m. and were still working their way through Foothills Mall three hours later.

"It's starting to look like all of the stores have the same items at exactly the same price," Johnson said.

Selection 2

Two English football fans in Cologne lost their car after mistakenly thinking they had parked it on a road called 'One Way Street'.
The pair wrote down 'Einbahn Strasse' - which means one-way street in German - so they didn't forget where they'd left the hire car.
But when they came to find it again they found that every second street in the inner city was called 'Einbahn Strasse'.
It was only when they found a policeman that they were told the sign was to inform drivers that they were on a one-way street.
They finally managed to find their vehicle hours later with the help of the German police.
