Report problems to boss or not?

I started a new job less than a week ago. The coworkers are 'training' me, and I have also read company training materials. The other workers have thier own ways of doing things that go against company policies. I continued to work according to the company's policy and they discouraged me from doing so. One worker in particular told me I was working to fast, and she wanted to get the project done slower than a customer requested because she thinks the customer is 'a bit*h' Our manager requested the project be done sooner. I did all I could to comply with his wishes, but had the other workers against me. Should I tell my boss--I want the customers, and my boss to be happy. But I dont know if the boss will be glad to know, or see me as a 'snitch'? And I'm sure at least one of the workers will hate me for doing so.

I agree that as a manager, I would also want to know. That kind of behavior creates a culture that is descructive to the team, the company, and your customers.

I would do three things:

1. Tell your boss that you are having a problem and that you would like the opportunity to deal with it first. You will gain your boss' support and respect.

2. Confront the co-worker and let this employee know that you are going to do what is right.

3. Lead by example. No matter what happens, don't compromise your work ethic or your values.

Most likely, your boss already senses the problem and this is probably not the first time this has been mentioned.

I think the best way to handle this situation is to play dumb.. for example: tell your boss how your coworker did the job and ask (all innocently) if that is the right way?
This way it will seem to your boss that you are just trying to find out the correct way, and you won't look like a snitch.
Good luck, you are in a tough situation!

Do not snitch this early on the job. Fellow employees can sabotage you. You are doing the right thing. Who is the project leader of the project, the boss? If so, when you finish task deadlines, send them an email stating that you have finished, and would it be ok to assist Jane Doe with her part so that you can meet deadline. You have now shown you are doing your job, and you have offered to go above and beyond. This way you are a subtle snitch. The boss may never catch on to what you are doing which is even better than them catching on. This way no one is mad at you, and you have covered your tush.

Best of luck!

Unfortunately this is a typical problem. Lack of "hands on" leadership allows for high variation in work methods.

Go with your instinct, as a manager, I would want to know. This will be a test of your working relationship and your manager might not really care.

Good luck.

You are way too new to tell any boss anything, nobody will appreciate it and you'll be in a worse position for it - you have to treat your colleagues as mini bosses in the beginning, build yourself a reputation then in a few months, reassess how it goes
