For recent college graduates?

This question is aimed at only those that did NOT get the job (or position) that he/she wanted until AFTER he/she graduated with a 4 year degree.

I'm not getting the position that I desire (a back office job). I have 15 years of total work experience. I have limited office experience. (may be 1 year of office experience combined). I do not desire to work in direct care (that was my last job) and I do not desire to work as a cashier (did that back in 2001-was not for me) and I do not desire to work as a factory worker (did that back in 1994-1997. Although I may not mind being a manager in the manufacturing field.

(Hint: I'd like to be a Project Manger/Project Assistant OR work in IT, however, I have no expereince in that. This is why I am in college-to get the degree). Moving to northern California is not an option right now. Please just state what you did to get your desired position.

How did you go about your job hunt in getting the position that you desired? Did you do something different that many people do not think about? If yes, what was it? How long did it take for you to get the position that you wanted (after you graduated)?

Did you move (if you lived in an area that only had the kinds of jobs that you did NOT want)? Did you need to drive (or take a bus) to look for work 30-60 miles away from home? (I do live in the Inland Empire,so this question is relevant for those of us in Riverside County). Did you look only on-line? Did you have your resume done professionally? Did you go door-to-door and pass out your resume to certian companies reguardless if they were hiring or not? Did you research the companies values first and then go about trying to get your foot in the door? Did you know someone that worked there and that is how you got the position you desired? Did you need to get a degree first and that was the only thing holding you back (for getting the position that you wanted?

You've asked some difficult questions but I will give it my best shot.

I graduated in 1999 with an economics degree and immediately began applying for positions in financial services (my intended occupation). After a lack of luck in financial services, I expanded the search and landed a job working in human resources (via labor economics background). I also began an MBA program.

After graduation, I decided to pursue a niche in aviation and took a job doing airport planning/consulting for a Colorado firm. I found the job by looking through industry-specific websites and avoiding monster.com/careerbuilder.com.

Since you are still in college, I strongly recommend interning as much as possible in your given area, even if it is an unpaid internship. Many of the best internships are advertised only on a company's website, meaning you'll have to do some research. However, this is the single best way to build a resume in a given speciality area. It also exposes you to potential industry contacts who can vouch for your work ability and competencies.

When it comes time to do your resume, try it yourself (first). Definitely use peer review from friends, family, and faculty to make sure it looks good and is free from errors. I would also solicit the advice of friends to review your letter of application.

Best of luck in your job search.
