Is this dodging the bullet? A manager who can't give a straight answer.?

Your Open QuestionShow me another 禄
Is this a lay off, or let go or who knows?
My husband has been disabled for the last 5 years due to MS. ( Multple Sclerosis) He has been on a new drug regime and opted to go back to work part time doing something he is familiar with. ( professional chef of 20+ years ) He went to work part time at a local produce arrangeing business which he is totally over qualified for but it's work and extra money for us.
He was hired, put out to work the next day. He worked over 40+ hours the week of Mother's Day and he anticipated he would continue with this company.

He worked 2 weeks, doing above and beyond, his manager even told me "he is such a wonderful addition to us!". There is a weird twist.

The manager would not give us a projected schedule only my husband know he night before she needed help. The last day he worked was the day after mother's day. She hasn't called back since!!

What gives? She spoke to us once and told my husband she would need him on Friday and would call. That was over a week ago! ?

BTW.. he has called several times.. and was told "I will call you tomorrow".. and it never happened. We took the hint, but find it odd that a manager could not be honest and not send false messages!

Ah.. for the person who said he'd go to work anyway.. are you kidding? LOL

Does he have anything in writing? If not he needs to get something in writing. Insist. If he can't get anything in writing it is time to move on.

Maybe he can use this as an opportunity to begin his on business? Being a Chef gives him a skill Everyone can use. Without knowing his area of expertise, maybe begin by doing Birthday or Wedding cakes? or possibly catering to simple and then more involved events.

I would think he would have a lot of flexibility with what he does and this could result in the Best thing ever for him!

I Hope this Helps!

Was he hired as a temporary employee? Is there no set schedule? If he is an on-call employee, they can do it. If you live in certain states, they can let him go for no reason. He needs to go to the business and pin them down. Tell them he needs to work and if they are not going to use him, he needs to look for another job. Good luck....

I'd go anyway. If he's doing it on purpose he won't get away with it. And the boss can't blame anyone but himself.

if he filled out all his paperwork like his w-4, he is an employee. Unless you have something stating he is on call/temp he is an employee. Even if you don't have it in writing as long as he worked there and received a paycheck they have to give him formal notice. Even in a right to work state you have to be written up 3 times before they can let you go. I would file for unemployment and claim employer abandonment.
