Need information for doing project on waste management ? Go to google.com and type land pollution President Nixon did a lot for America regaurding environmental issues (RCRA), even more so than presidents that came after him. One part of RCRA was to find ways to prevent leaching of waste products in our dumps into the ground soils and underground water supplies. Since then we have had a number of innovations in rendering this problem. We now seperate our wastes into different categories (i.e. metals, hazardous wastes, etc.) but we also developed a way to prevent the afore mentioned leaching. Dumps were now responsible for containing all wastes that were collected on their property. They would have either plastics put down under the dump site or a thick layer of clay (excellent way to stop leaching and natural too!). Furthermore, companies were deemed responsible for any mishaps or malfunctions of these dumps making it their priority to manage them well. This is why we refer to them as waste managers and their dumps are now called landfills. |
