What are the components of a Self management team, versus a project team?

I would like to know the scope of involvement of the organization's upper management with regards to a project team and a self management team.

There is no one right or wrong answer for this. For a project team, upper management's involvement can run the gamut from totally hands off to micro-managing the entire process. In a slef-managed team, upper management is supposed to act as catalysts and facilitators, with eth self-managed team taking control of the entire process.

In short, though, a project team is put together, usually by management, to solve a specific problem or work on a specific project. The team completes the assignments and usually disbands (although some companies have been known to convert project teams into autonomous or self-managed teams).

The organizational design literature has a plethora of information and research on both these topics.
