Transferring out of NYPD?

My goal is to eventually get a gig as an 1811 for a big 3 letter agency. For a long time now, I had been looking into a number of possible routes to make that goal a reality-- none of which included the impossibly low paying NYPD (it was my first choice until I discovered the pay.) Now that they raised the salary and it just might be enough to survive in NYC, it's back on the table for me as an option.

In my research, I've heard some horror stories of people the NYPD just wouldn't let go. I'm sure they don't exactly appreciate their officers leaving for "greener pastures", but I have heard stories where they would refuse to release the necessary personnel files for the hiring agencies to look at.

It's not a secret that the NYPD doesn't exactly have a great relationship with agencies like the FBI so I'm worried that these may be more than just random, isolated events.Obviously, there's no departmental policy on this, but does anyone have any first hand knowledge on what I can expect?

The NYPD is no longer a stepping stone to other agencies. Many will take you and working for the NYPD still does look good but consider the following and think about this real hard!!!!

I have 8 years on and applied for the Port Authority Police Department. I have been denied a position there twice becuase of the records. This is big because more and more, other departments want ur police records to show what kind of police officer you are.

Now if that alone doesnt make you think, lets just say while DOING YOUR JOB, a guy you arrested talks to his lawyer. In turn, the lawyer tells this perp to file a complaint against you (ccrb) for no reason at all. Even if the NYPD finds you not guilty, that stays on ur record. I have applied to departments where they ask you that. You can write someone a ticket and just cause they are mad they will file a complaint against you!!! A couple of these will make your "greener pastures" seem harder to get too.

Now take these retarded, dumb *** bosses that you encounter here and there on the job and you have more **** to worry about. IAB is stronger than ever, they are more worried about white socks than you working to prevent crime.

The NYPD is no longer a career and I dont understand why anyone would want to take this job anymore. Poor pay, City hates you, Bloomberg hates you, Public hates you, Commissioner wont back you up, You can get fired for doing your job, IAB, CCRB, Lawsuits, NYPD Brass, inadequate equipment, criminals are being hired, bad evaluations because you didn't bring in "numbers". etc, etc the list goes on and on!!!

Finish your bachelors and go straight into the FBI! No one wants this job anymore and its more hurtful than helpful in looking for other law enforcement work!
