You don't need to know any programming languages, but you do need to know how to install software and drivers, etc. You may need to be comfortable with the DOS command prompt so you can get around before an operating system is installed.

No, but *nix / MS-DOS prompt knowledge could go a long way. I had to use a command prompt when I was installing Vista on my computer to resize a hard drive partition.

I don't think it's needed. Hardly any programming is required nowadays to do maintenance.
