How do I stop my brakes from squealing?

I've been trying to find a solution to the squealing sound that my front brakes have been making for quite some time, and now I would like to know what the collective knowledge of the Yahoo! Answers community has to tell me. I have taken my car in to 2 separate repair shops and both places have agreed that my brakes look good and are not in need of replacement, so this is not the issue. One of the shops explained to me that since my car is a 1985 Mercedes when the front brakes were replaced by the previous owner they were not replaced with Mercedes brand brake pads, so they grind a little since they don't quite fit properly. I have also tried using an oil-based spray on the brakes and that made them squeal less, but the results were pretty short lived.

So, my question really is this: What can I do (without buying new brakes or pads, I already know that option) to reduce the squealing that I can't hardly stand???

Thanks! 鈾?/div>

I guess it wasn't really an oil-based spray, but one of those sprays that are made to reduce squealing in brakes, sorry for the confusion, my brain is a little frazzled right now.

Common problem after replacing pads.
Auto parts stores sell brake pad silencer, which is a liquid silicone glue type stuff. A person is supposed to put it on the back of the pads during the pad replacement. If you are not mechanically inclines, you can take it to a repair shop, and have the brake silencer put on.
Some cars have metal silencers that come with the pads, and these are usually factory replacement pads that you would buy at the dealership (i.e. Mercedes pads).
The silicone would be cheaper.

sorry but some type of pads do squeak more than others... grease the back of the pads shoul d have done the job and rust a round the edges of the rotors casue it also.... but both cant be help with oil that would just mess up the pads more.... greasing the backs of the brake pads is what should have been done and really if you going to take them off should go a head and replace and have the rotors turn.. sorry

it could just be brake dust. take some brake cleaner and spray them down.

All my brake pads came with a little tube of "goo" that was to be applied to the back of the pad or the little thin flat plate that went behind the pads. The goo hardened to gum, which dampened the vibrations, which are caused by the brake rotor turning and rubbing past the brake pads, like a violin bow rubbing past the violin string and causing it to make its sound.

Just have the shop pull the pads and look to be sure that the sound-dampening goo was applied to the back of the pads in the appropriate place. Better yet, ask them to show it to you. It will only take a few minutes and so shouldn't cost much.

Best regards,
Mike
