In some countries, young people graduated from high schools are encouraged to work or travel for one year before entering universities. For those who take this decision, there are both advantages and disadvantages.
On one hand ,this one-year work or travel may help their study in certain ways. As all subjects set in universities are related to particular area of the society ,it鈥檚 good for them to know the practical use of the knowledge before studying. Take architecture for example. If the students could travel around the nation or world after high school graduation, they are able to get an unforgettable visual experience of buildings of different styles, which will help them understanding the courses they will take in the university. Another example is management, this subject is quite abstract. A one-year working experience can help the prospective students understand how an organization works, what the managers do , what problems exist in the management system.. Thus when they start learning in the university, they will have better understanding of the courses and trying to figure out solutions they collected during the practical work..
On the other hand, there are also some disadvantages which we should not ignore. Firstly, could the high school graduates pick up their studies after the year away from school? Secondly, are the young adults mature enough to enter the world of reality? They may not have the skill to take some worthy jobs .They could be bullied by bad guys in society, get into bad habits like smoking or drinking alcohol , or become to relaxed to study again.
Due to reasons above, families with young high school graduates had better take all factors into consideration when making this decision ,and the young adult himself/herself should also think about this issue seriously .

An important advantage is is that all university subjects relate to particular areas of society and a year's travel will broaden the outlook of students. This offers a more practical understanding of the subject for which they intend to enrol. Architecture is a good example. A student who has travelled extensively in Europe will have a more comprehensive knowledge of architecture in a historical context. Provided the year's travel is used wisely and the student elects to explore areas pertaining to, or relating to their chosen subject the experience may be invaluable. It can provide a practical and visual foundation for future studies along with offering the student relief from the previous years of study. University can commence feeling relaxed and refreshed.
The same is applicable where a student chooses to work and gains employment, particularly if their chosen field is a subject relating to Business Management. Gaining hands-on experience in the work environment will provide an important base from which to study Administration and may give insights which prepare the student's understanding of competent and efficient management.
Disadvantages may arise when the student does not use the year's break wisely and squanders the time. This attitude may cause the student to lose focus on studies and diminish his/her ability to restart their studies at University with a clear target. Maturity,or lack of it, may be the deciding factor on whether to take a year off from studies.
