Managing an Open Source Website

I am going to hire a web programmer to create an Open Source Website for me. Before I post the project, do I need to tell the web programmer what Open Source software I will be using?

Also, what is the best Open Source management software for Mac (user friendly - I'm a beginner), and what sort of information do I need to provide to the web programmer in advance (other than the layout, text and function of the website).

I only have html experience (designing simple websites) and have a limited knowledge of PHP/ MySQL (through tutorials). Am I in way over my head, or can I learn what I need to know just by playing around with the Open Source program? Please be kind (and thorough) in your answers!!

Thanks

Hi Joe, thanks. I guess I'm confused about what open source is. I thought that open source website is one that has a database accessible to those who use it (log-in, membership, modifying profiles etc..) And that OS software is what you manage the website with.

So now my question is: If the website is created for me, what do I manage it with? Like I said, I've only created small websites for my business and these a virtually maintenance free. So I have limited knowledge on what is involved in managing a membership/database style website. I hope that clarifies a bit - thanks.

I'm a bit confused at your question. You use the term "Open Source" as though it's some kind of product or a specific application.

Free and Open Source Software is defined here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FOSS

If you're going to ask a developer to build you a website *using* open source software, then, yes, you should tell him what you want him/her to use. As for "management software," I'm also a bit confused about that...I work in web application development and I use "open source" tools and applications (PHP, Apache, MySQL, editors, libraries, etc.). I'm just trying to understand the concept you're trying to describe.
