I would like it professionally done, but want to be able to add and edit easily afterward. What programs should I use, or have the designer use? Any recommendations for businesses who can help me out?

Look up " build a website" in google. there are many different sites out there that allow for easy editing and web hosting. Choose a regular template and as you become familiar with the procedure you can move to a flash template for a more professional look. Good luck !

hey i used to do this.
for a small buisness i suggest a simple open source cms (content management system) such as joomla or post nuke, dotnetnuke... there are heaps u can try. Just google cms and find one that suits your needs. These are all fitted with an admin part which easily allows u to add and edit info. some also have a e-commerce where you can sell over the net. these are better than the simpler html because it is easier to edit and update information.

You mentioned you want it to be professionally done. I suggest use CMS (Content Management Systems). There are a lot of them free on the web for you to download. I suggest Wordpress, Drupal, Joomla and Mambo. You can also select templates for them.

It really depends on your knowledge of website building and what kinds of elements you want to put on the site. The easiest thing might be to just open an ebay account. Another option that I've used a few times is freewebs.com. They offer several pre-made templates and you don't really need any knowledge of html coding to build one. You can have a basic website ready to go in a few hours. I've included a link to one site I built there for a friend whose wedding I photographed in the north of England last year. Only took me a few hours. Just so you'll have an idea. There are many other sample sites on the main site at www.freewebs.com as well. Good luck to you.

wordpress can be used to build sites. it's not just for blogging. it's available on hosts who offer Fantastico scripts; they'll install it for you. it's easy to learn and gives you content management. there are plugins for it so you can add ecommerce, galleries. I'm not talking about wordpress.com which is a blog community. I'm talking about the platform itself, which you can learn about at wordpress.org
wordpress themes can be customized, i've done it a few times.

I would recommend going with a web design company, at least then you'll know that your site is unique and they cater to your specific needs.
