Pond help over run with algae?

i have a pond in my yard approx 11X10 and 2ft deep

im having a problem with algae and I have tried many solutions but nothing works

my pond is covered with algae and the water is green

what can I do?

i have 60 koi and am thinking in buying a large pleco to clean up the water

First of all, you have way TOO MANY Koi for that size pond. You really should think about cutting that number in half. The more fish you have in one pond the more oxygen you need to have circulating and your Koi wont get very big and probably be unhappy and feel cramped.

Either remove some of your Koi or make your pond bigger. Depending on the type of liner you are using it shouldn鈥檛 be bad. Hopefully you sort this problem out first, because it鈥檚 the biggest issue you have.

As for algae problem鈥?Have you tried Barley straw? That鈥檚 supposed to work very effective and it is fairly cheap and should work well in a pond your size. It鈥檚 only about $20 for a three month supply. Perhaps you need to invest in a filter system that is adequate. I鈥檇 recommend setting up something that runs water through large rocks, then smaller rocks, then through a screen to trap excess dirt. It鈥檚 a cheap way to filter. OR just buy a filter already made. Do NOT chemically treat your pond though. That鈥檚 probably the worst way to solve it. If you use too much chemical you will harm your plant/fish. It鈥檚 also the most costly thing you can do. So, not a good idea鈥?br>
A Pleco will NOT solve your algae problem. Can you really expect one fish to take care of an ENTIRE pond? Not even 5 would sort this sort of thing out鈥?You can buy large Plecos from people that sell fish for a living. Do a google search for people in your area.

If you want Plecos I鈥檇 recommend you buy several 5 or so and release them in your pond after you have quarantined them for a few days. The smaller Plecos will enjoy being in a large space and grow rapidly. Plus, wouldn鈥檛 you be upset if your $20 large Pleco died? This way you have better odds of survival as well for relatively the same price.

Don鈥檛 forget you do need to solve your problem of overcrowding first, before you do anything. Especially before you release any more fish in your pond.

Koi carp really need the water to be running so a good pump and filter is a good start. A uv filter is good for a microscopic algal bloom but wont help with blanket weed algae. Also placing magnets on the filter pipe disrupts the algal cells as they pass through the pipe, there are also some chemical algacidals available but make sure they are ok for the carp. Go to your local gardening center or nursery that also deals with ponds, or a pool and pond specialist store, they should be able to help. There is also good biological algae deterrants available, frog tadpoles, snails, small cleaner catfish and other plants, any plants will use the nitrate that causes the algae.

Koi is a good hobby business to start if you arent really in it for the money, just yet, if you want it to be a full time business, then you need a lot more than what you have got. Good luck and i am sorry i wasnt more help.
