How can I recycle my 60 watt light bulbs?

I'm replacing any standard 60 watt bulbs with fluorescent once they burn out, but what can I do with the old ones? I tried to research it, but was overwhelmed with no easy solutions - I only found resources for large businesses and organizations that you can ship to for a pricey amount. I just have one bulb at the moment but I know throwing it in the garbage is bad. What can I do with it? (Specifically in Chicago)

I typically put them in a plastic garbage bag and when nobody is looking, throw them out my car window. Seems to work.

the old style bulbs have little that would affect the environment,however the new compact fluorescent do have traces of mercury that must be dealt with.

I have switched all of my incandescent light bulbs to the CFL over the past 6 months. I gave away the incandescent bulbs to the local thrift store. I assume someone will be given these or can buy them at a discount rate. Some of them were new and still in their packaging.

I have a sister-in-law that makes Christmas ornaments out of old light bulbs. Perhaps you can check with some craft shops.
