What career will involve math/numbers and working alone for the majority of the time?

I love solving math problems such as in a calculus class, however I don't much like dealing with customers. I'm a bank teller currently and customer service is something I don't want to do the rest of my life. My perfect career would be sitting at a desk on a computer trying to calculate a solution to a problem. I also do not like business, so I'm trying to find a career that doesn't require many business courses, therefore not involving business in the job. I was thinking about becoming an actuary, however the business aspect is what turns me off. I also thought about becoming a mathematician, but I'm worried I won't be smart enough even after getting a degree. Any career ideas or tips?

Coding. Just learn C++ php, pearl, java or any other coding language, it sounds perfect for you and it is the job of the future.

You can easily make lots of money by writing custom scripts you don',t even need a job as such just use sites like http://www.elance.com/ to get tons and tons of very highly paid work.

if you are interested, here's an aptitude test that seems to be popular http://gsx1.com/FreeAptiTest.htm

This doesn't involve a lot of calculating, but you could be a back office manager or computer room operator for a grocery store, or a better company for more money. They count money and total checks and such and don't work with the public except answer phones sometimes.

You and I can work together, lol, as I am a math major and would rather just crunch numbers and as well, don't care to work with the public. And would rather see what they do and don't do rather than applying them to something with a deadline.

Ever thought about pure research?

Derivatives - Trading especially. I dont particularly understand your aversion to business, but if you know your sh*t, people will leave you alone and let you work peacefully by yourself.

If you rock at math, then look at UCal Berkeley's Master's program. Quants make tons of money and you can either work for a firm, or go it alone.

If you are a good trader, and you want to be left alone, outside of bothering you for your lunch order, people will leave you alone. you could probably walk around bare-assed as long as you are making your marks.
