What should i major in during college?

I want to own a tack shop when i'm older, so i was wondering if in college i should major in Equine studies or business? Or is there any college that has a degree such as "equine business?"

Any input would be great, thanks alot.

I would definately for Equine studies if that is really what you want to do. Even if all you want to do is own a tack shop, the major would give you a much broader background in case you make you business larger. There are only a few equine schools that I know of. One is the University of Findlay in Ohio, which is a private school and more expensive.

The school I'm going to is the University of Wisconsin-River Falls. I'm majoring in Equine Management, which is the business side but it is also good to minor in business. It's cheaper than a private school, but still is a very good program.

If you are really into riding horses as well, UWRF has Western and English riding teams as well as a rodeo team for the barrel racers.

I believe that there are equine business degrees available, but if the college that you choose doesn't have one, then go for the business degree. Since horses are your hobby, then you will naturally learn more about them, but business will never be a "hobby" so take the chance to learn from the pros. Besides, a tack shop that can't keep its head above water financially will never need a person that knows everything about horses.... it won't be open long enough.

I have found that I can learn just about everything about the horse business without taking (paying for) classes. Equine science to be a vet an what not is different but for business, find a trainer or big ranch operator to let you intern or something, it's what I did after I was completely bored by a horsemanship class in college. I chose to major in something that will ensure I have a job if my breeding business ever goes down the toilet and it has worked out very well.

It depends how you want to approach things. If you want to own your own business, then I would suggest the business degree because it gives you a wider range of things you can do and get into later on if the tack business itself does not work out. However, if you want to focus on the animal science side, UC Davis in Davis, CA has some of the best veterinary and animal science programs in the United States.

You may want to look up the academic requirements and the course load for each type of degree you are considering and see if it really interests you. You don't want to get into business and realize that some of the business math courses are too much of a pain (like they were for me) or that there is too much biology to learn about in the animal science programs.

Hope some of my sites referenced can offer some insight.

I don't think there is a degree such as equine business, but there are agricultural business degrees. Many major colleges in the south offer AgriBusiness degrees (A&M, Texas State, Tarleton State) Those degrees are geared towards careers in agriculture, such as working for the department of agriculture or other associations like that. A few schools in the New England states offer Equine studies. I would recommend just searching on line and looking for schools that interest you.

Do both, Its always nice to have an Equine degree if you are going to do a career in horses, but a business degree is just plain common sense. Its a good education that can be used in multiple jobs and a must in owning and running your own business. Good Luck in your future!

Any business major will be good for starting a business, you can also minor in any DVM program, that way you can study the two subjects your interested in for your career.

that is a great question. Talk to an adviser at any college or at your high school. I would suggest business, but they might know more about it than I would.

If i were you I would either do a major minor combo or double major with both of them.

Equine studies
