Sharing a car?

we have a family of 4.

Father- uses his special van for business and pleasue, and you need a special license to drive it

mother- works part time at a hospital, and goes grocery shopping, and out sometimes.

male 18 year old - has his own car, has no tickets after 2 years.. flawless driving record. goes to a different school than his siter who is 15, but picks her up sometimes

his sister is 15 and she is in need of a car in january. Do you think it is a good idea to sell the sons car and buy a new car for them both to share?

DO you think this will work?

If you can afford not to, I'd recommend a car for each. Sharing will lead to a lot of conflicts and arguments.

Two older cars is better than one new car. Then share only if/when one car is in the shop for repairs.

I think if a person needs a car, they need to be responsible and find a way to pay for it themselves and follow through with the upkeep, insurance, etc.

If the son bought the car with his own money, I don't think it's fair to sell his car especially if he's an adult and going to school and work.

Sounds like a family discussion is going to happen at the dinner table soon!

My sister and I shared a car all the way through high school and college. In my opinion it is a privilege and not a need for a teenager to have a car. 3 cars for a 4 person family is more than enough.

And why even sell the son's car. My brother, my sister and I all had to share the old car that was available. It's not easy but it did teach us to compromise and work together.
