Is starbucks puttting the mom and pops coffee shops out of business?

Yes...they are on a rampage!

Some, yes, but Starbucks is like McDonnalds...their novetly is wearing off. Those of us who actually LIKE COFFEE will find our favorite Mom & Pop coffee joint much more satisfying! INTELEGENCIA FOREVER!!!

Thankfully, their initial shock factor has worn off....now people go to less conformist coffee shops for live music and comfortable seating and free internet access. However, considering the easy access to a starbucks shop, everytime people travel they always stop at a starbucks, so they'll never really go out of style.

not necessarily, i presume. there are still some who would prefer Pops' others would stick to starbucks.

whats a mom and pop coffee shop? we have local coffee shops lots of them where i am and they are doing really well likely better than the starbucks in our area because they've been here longer and are more people friendly, they have couches and comfy chairs and tables and better music playing and room to read and study and discuss things..... starbucks is kind of a get it and go kind of thing......
i'm not much of a coffee drinker but i don't think starbucks is that great coffee wise and the mocha frapichinos, itallian soda's and hot chocolate isn't that great

just like with any artisanal business that "goes large", we are seeing the beginnings of a grassroots backlash against mr. schulz's green apron brigade. people seem to be latching on to that new little maverick coffee house as they seek a respite from the corporate cup o' joe.

one must at least give charphucques (they flash-roast their beans a la kingsford in this java slugger's rarely humble opinion) the nod for maintaining as boutique a feel as they have with the number of stores that they now sport.

The people who shop at Starbucks (instead of their
local mom & pop) are putting the mom & pop coffee
shops out of business. Not Starbucks themselves.

C'mon people, WE the customers vote for (support) the
businesses we choose with the dollars we spend. If we
don't shop at a particular store, it goes out of business.
Plain and simple.

I know of like 2 coffee houses that have survived the starbucks on every corner craze... and that's only b/c they offer music/poetry/atmosphere that most of the starbucks around here do not. That being said- starbucks is convenient, are open most of the day, and have weaseled their way into our subconscious community mind. The real question is... how can they charge so much for those drinks... and then have the Grinds to put out a tip jar?...

no...they attract a diferent clientelle. You cant survive as a coffe-shop chain unless you are Starbucks, but a privately owned coffee shop who does a nice job will always keep their clientelle.
