In what ways can a small electronics repairing shop owner increase his business?

In what ways can a small electronics repairing shop owner increase his business?

You need to market your services, but you need to do so in a very targeted way. As a small business, I would assume you have a limited marketing budget. With that in mind, a commercial may be expensive and hit a large number of people who don't need or may never need your services. You can't afford to spend a lot of money on marketing efforts that bring no results. This could happen because what you offer is very specialized. As a marketer, I offer the following suggestions:

Think about your target audience. Who has been most likely to use your services in the past? Instead of just randomly placing an ad, think about ways you can reach people with similar characteristics to those you have served in the past. For example, if you are able to repair older electronics, perhaps you want to target older homeowners with direct mail.

People look for someone to repair electronics only when they need you. When they look, your business name should be easy to find. For the type of service you provide, I would highly recommend a modest yellow pages ad. Also make sure you are listed in local online directories.

Do you have a relationship with stores that sell electronics? If not, can you develop one? They will see the customers who come back with broken electronics and no warranty. Send these stores information about your shop. Perhaps you could visit them in person. With Christmas approaching, take them a holiday treat. In other words, set yourself up to get their referral.

Of all the advertising you can do, direct mail may be the most cost effective because you can target certain zip codes and age groups. Direct mail programs that include several advertisers in one booklet can be cost-effective for smaller businesses. You may be advertising to people who don't need your services at the moment, but this is a lower cost way of building some name recognition for when they do.

Take advantage of some free PR. Hold an event, perhaps a Saturday workshop to show kids how to repair or build something electronically. Send a news release announcing the event. Also send a release or call the media inviting them to attend the event. You might also look into making yourself kind of an "electronic gadget" expert. Would your local TV station be interested in having you appear on the noon news or some other program to talk about the latest electronic gadgets? You would have to be comfortable doing this and willing to put in the time of researching neat new electronics to present. Of course, an idea like this depends on whether a station is even interested. It gives you an idea though of how you can think creatively to market your shop without spending a ton of money.

For small business owners, I also recommend the book Utimate Small Business Marketing Guide. It gives you a wealth of low-cost marketing ideas.

going to school and getting a degree in fixing larger electronics, such as plasma, LCD and HDTV tvs that are out of warrenty, its good money. also if you fix computers get to really know the hardware, and start buying computer hardware and building custom gaming computers, i buy mine and update it everyyear with a guy who lives in Ohio and does it in his gargae, dude makes killer money, and his systems rock. If your talking in terms of staying the same but increasing traffic, advertising in a win/lose deal, you really have to do your home work and find out, what papers are the most read, which ad placment gets the most notice and such, direct mailings have worked for me in the past

a commercial or a mailer would be good. aslo, furthering education and learning how to fix new fangled electronics like i-pods and digital cameras and whatnots.
