Why do shops that sell clothes made by children in sweatshops stay in business?

Like the GAP, for example. They say they've stopped and then they get caught again and again. How can they be put out of business? Why isn't their corporate charter revoked?

Because people do not really care. They care only about the price and marketing. Even worse than the sweatshops in my mind is selling lead and ghb tainted toys to our children. Merry Christmas from Mattell. I hope all parents boycott ALL of these large corporation importing from China this Christmas.

its about the money. the love off money is always the root of all evil. but whats goes around come around. maybe not for you but your kid and so on and in that time your generation down the line will work for nothing

Would you rather pay $10 or $45 for the same shirt? As a whole, most Americans are cheap. Unfortunately.... As for how they can be put out of business, thats simple, boycott.

Because people will buy them.

You are under a bit of a myth --- the children working in those factories in say Indonesia make a wage often far exceeding anything that their families could earn. So the market clears.

A while back I was able to buy oxford cloth 3 button shirts from Lands End for about $34,00 --- these had a label made in the USA --- I read a story that these shirts were being made in SC at a small mill.

I was mocked for "boring shirts" by a very liberal fashion conscienous person who world Tommy Hiligifer(sp) clothes.

His shirt were made in Indonesia with very thin fabric but they had his logo on them and they sold for $60,00. They sold --- Land's end did not ---

So if you seek to know why --- look at what you buy.

I think you must look at the label if it says Made in China or Made in India you should not buy the clothes. Those two countries have no Labour Laws, Human rights. The Uk, USA, RSA have much stricter Labour Laws. Especially in South Africa. No person under 15 is allowed to work. Heavy penalties and even Jail sentence or both if a employer gets caught. it is such a big problem World wide and I also feel guilty because christmas is near and if you look at most of the products 99% says made in china or India. But then again not everything made in India and china is made by children and by not buying the products one can put a honest worker out of business. The Companies who use these factories should be ethical and first investigate who is making their products. I do not think the problem will be easily erradicated, Western Greed vs Poverty. some people are willing to work all day for a few cents. It is such a terrible and sad situation. I think if every country is allowed to have strong Labour Unions the problem will be erradicated, because the Unions will look after its members.

If the price is right, that is all that matters. Principles and morals matter to few people in today's world.
