Is a jewelry business or caprentry business a smart idea? |
i need some advice in trying to help my mother & brother start their own business. my mother has been selling jewelry and my brother has been a freelance carpenter but have no business background or education past high school. i understand we need to get our business licenses, sales permits, etc and i know small businesses are risky. we thought about restaurants, coffe shops, franchises like SUBWAY, but they both want to start something they both know & love doing. will this be a good move? they both have years of experience in the fields & have the capital to start one up but we are definitely gonna seek professional help when we decide to move forward. are there any Goverment programs to assist in California? any suggestions or comments will be appreciated. I do small business consulting and would be happy to work with your mother and brother to help them determine what will work for them and how to get up and running. In the alternative you could send them to the SBA (see the pages in front of your phone book for their phone number, Small Business Administration) and give them a call and take some basic short-term courses with them for a fee. They will tell every detail on how to get started in small business startup. In addition, before anyone starts a business they need to do a "5-year plan" to plan ahead to make sure that in five years (when most other business have gone under) that they will still be in business. A lot of the USA really small businesses have gone under because the products we get from overseas are a lot cheaper and pay their employees a lot less, so what I'm saying is to make money in the USA you'd have to sell a product 1) that everyone needs and wants, and 2) that the price you put on it plus your time, is affordable at the low prices we now enjoy. if you want to do business of jewelry pls feel free contact me . cool idea! It's tough for me to say how good you would do in carpentry (which I feel is totally set on the demand in the area) or jewelry (which is based on client猫le and affluence of the area) but as far as franchising goes you might want to checkout Franchise Gator (http://www.franchisegator.com) to do some research on the franchises you are considering. They have a lot of good articles and comparative information on there and the research tools are essential to me before I make a franchise decisions, as is my lawyer. Cheers!
