I want to start my own business.. How?

Hi to you all.

I am due to leave the british army in a few months and want to know the best way to start up a business in the uk. I am either looking at starting an online shop selling outdoor equipment or a high street shop selling the same.

Does anyone know the best place to go to get help doing this or does any know any pros and cons of either type of business.

If you have tried this sort of thing before or know anything about it, then your help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks to all.

First know your product. The best thing you can do is to get a job in someone elses shop selling the products you eventually intend to deal with in order to get some experience and knowledge of the product and it's market.

Second get guidance and training on business, taxation, marketing, cash flow ect ect ect. There are various organasions that wil train you. The training does not take long, it is of high standard and it comes with one to one help regarding the putting together of a viable business plan.

CSV and BRAVE are two such organisations and you can find out where they are in your area through the job centre. If you are working you will have to pay for this training and it will be worth every penny. If you are unemployed you may get it for free.

Depending on where you are, I would contact your local 'Business Links'. They are run by UK Trade and Investment / the Department of Trade and Industry. They have a lot of practical information online from starting up through to managing the business. In addition you will probably get an advisor and pointers to any grants etc available.

Quality of services delivered can vary enormously but its a good starting point.

I would recommend doing a combination of both, but first you need to get a good accountant, who doesn't charge the earth, and a good bank account - a good accountant again can help you organise this and help with the start-up arrangements (forms, notifying the right people, costs) - I would recommend you email steve@quartaaccountancy.co.uk - really cheap and excellent service, or look at his website at www.quartaaccountancy.co.uk

first of all you need to think whether you prefer interacting with people or not - if you open an online shop and work from home with little contact from customers who'll all be buying online then it could prove quite lonely. however saying that, it could give you loads more freedom as you could work the hours of the day you want to, and take a day off with no notice if need be - but if you have a shop you'll have to have regular opening hours and stick to them!
maybe a short course in business planning would prove useful - you can start it now by studying from home http://rebecca-swift.co.uk/courses.aspx
Good luck whatever you decide!

1st thing you need to be aware of is that you will need to register with the inland revenue that you are intending or actually trading as self employed. to do this you need to complete form CWF1 which can be downloaded from www.hmrc.gov.uk (best to put it in the search bar) this form will need to be submitted within 3 months of the end of the month in which you started trading, so if you started say 10 jan 07 the form needs to be submitted byend of april 07 otheriwse they will fine you 拢100. they will then send you ur tax reference number and some other stuff which is worth you while to read. you will also need to arrange to pay class 2 national insurance which is about 拢2.10 a week.

this will also mean you will get a tax return on the 6th april to be complete and submitted along with any tax due on or before the following 31 jan.

if you looking to open a shop your gonna need finance, in order to get finace you will need a business plan and probably some capital (savings) to put towards the money a bank would lend you. best thing to do is visit a local bank and set up a meeting with their business advisor who will explain it all to you.

if selling online then you will need to decide if you will have your own website or sell via ebay or similar. you will also need to decide how to finance stock or arrange contracts with suppliers who you can order from when u receive an order (ie your just a middle man. obviously if you have your own website you will need to consider methods of payment and ensure your site is secure. your most likely gonna need a server to hold a database of customers details so you will need a professional website builder unless you use the premade sites that you can buy in a pack from computer shops.

Hi,
I can help you start your own at home business. If you are interested please email me, I will explain it further then.

Thank you,
