Is continuing parents business a good idea?

i am afraid if i learn and continue my parents business they will be controlling me and i will have no rights to control the business. and i really want to take my girlfriend with me to learn and continue my parents business, do you think it's a good idea? will my girlfriend suffer when she is with me in my parent business? and i am the youngest and the only son in the family. my sisters have already had their own family and job. fyi, they have car spare parts shop.

Until you grow up it is not a good idea. Apparently they have made a success with what they do and you want to walk in and take control of a gift they worked so hard to achieve. You want your girl friend to learn .Sign # one to a parent you have a lack of commitment . It is a whole lot easier to get married and remain in a committed marriage than it is to run a business.
You do not want to be controlled buy them out. if not it is their baby so suck it up and take the heat.

You need to work out the responsiblities of the business with your parents before you start. They are probably going to want to stay involved in some ways, but if you can agree beforehand, it will help. If they like your girlfriend, that should be okay. If not, well, talk it out now, not later.

you have to talk to them about it... but having a well known business is great... go for it

i'm sure in the coming years, your parents will grow older, maybe weaker. and if you can see on their side, maybe you can see how they will feel sad to see the business they toiled so hard, passed to somebody else, if you don't want to takeover. as parents, sure, i guess they want the family to take over the business. it's natural.

still, if your concern is being controlled by them. are your parents really that controlling? maybe you can explain your side better to them, and win their support?

anyway. maybe you can manage the business, alongside whatever you're doing? get some help, with technology, you can do accounting, business analysis etc all faster. if you can do it all now, why not. good luck!

If you're gonna be "continuing" your parents business, doesn't that mean they're getting ready to retire? So you take some heat while they're training you and your girl, then they're out of there.

Be willing to learn! After you learn you will have ideas. Talk over your ideas with them. Chances are good that you're not the first one to think of it. Their experience is worth gold. It's dangerous if you feel that if they disagree they are trying to control you. Many businesses are lost by second and third generation owners. The advantage of having your parents advice in operating a successful business is like being a 100 year old wise business man.
