How do I find out, if my business name is OK to use? How do I register my new small cleaning business for irs?

Well, I had cards made up and passed them out to all sorts of offices and businesses, but, now I don't know what to do, if they call, because, I really don't know what to charge to clean an office or a real estate property and I have to register this, so I won't get in trouble. I didn't know I had to do this! It kind of makes me angry, because all these illegals are working and getting paid without even being legally here and they don't have to report a thing! PLUS, they get all sorts of aid on the side from our own government! So, why can't I just clean to catch up on my bills?! I have NO gas on to heat my house and it's cold outside! I barely have food to eat here and I see illegals with shopping carts overflowing with food! What is going on in this country?! What's wrong with this picture? I mean, I went to dental tech school and graduated, only to be told mostly all those jobs went to NAFTA! (*To places like, Guatamala, etc...) But, I am willing to work, so I won't lose my home!!!!

One, calm down.

Two, I do freelance web design so I hear you on needing money to pay the bills. It actually depends on how many people are in your company. If you're the only person in your company, you're in luck! You can claim your earnings under your own social security number provided your company name contains your full name in it.

Ex. "Joe Smith's Cleaning Service"

If your business doesn't contain your full name, you need to go to the department of state website for whichever state you live in. They have forms to get what is called a DBA *Doing Bussiness As* In Minnesota *Where I live* it cost $35.

They'll mail you a certificate and then you have to notify a legal newspaper in your county to post your business name. It doesn't cost anything to have them post it, trust me they have people call daily about this. You then must keep a copy of this notice with your certificate.

Other than that, keep copies of your invoices for tax time and save about 30% of your earnings for taxes *If need said taxes need to be paid* If you keep good track of your driving mileage, you can deduct $.48 a mile each time you drive to a clients.

Call around your town for a tax accountant that specializes in freelancers and sole proprietaries. They'll give you good advice for free on what you should be keeping records of.

Good luck!

I didn`t read your whole message. No time to read everyones stuff. When you apply for your license, they will tell you if it`s a legally acceptable name~

easy Kim, just charge by the hour to start with, or go look at the work and make a bid. Don't worry about infringing on another business. They can only complain, if they also clean buildings. If you find the work harder than anticipated, or, that it takes longer, you can renegotiate. Liberals love illegals.

If all you are looking to do is register a false name (a DBA, or Doing Business As), go to your county clerk's office. In some places you can do a search online before you go to make sure no one else is currently using that name. If you are just doing cleaning under your own name, nothing else, you don't need to register anything. You would report your income and expenses of the business on your individual tax return. You only need to register with the IRS if you are a partnership or corporation, or if you hire employees. You may need a business license. Again, check with your county or city clerk's office. They will also tell you if there are any other licenses you may need.

First, depending on what state you live in you should contact the secretary of state, business registrar, or department of commerce. Just google register business name to find the right agency.

As for the IRS, you may want to get a Federal Identification number (FIN) so you don't have to use your SSN & to open a business checking account.

You then could check with the SBA (U.S. Gov't. Small Business Administration for sound business advice that costs' little. Visit your local Chember of Commerce for assistance as well.

By focusing on the positive aspects of you business, you could end up doing quite well in you venture, and profitable too!
Good Luck!
