How did you raise money for a business???

I want to know from people that have looked for ways to raise money to start their business. Did you ask others? Did you do a fundraiser? What did you say or do? Etc...I want to raise money to go back to school and later open a coffee shop, but don't really want to ask family or go to a bank.

Family
Friends
Investors
Bank
Small Business Assoc (gov't)

Bottom line if you go to an institution: you better have a solid business plan on how you're going to turn a profit within 3 years.
