What rules do you have to follow when running a furniture business?

im looking at going into business making furniture for childrens rooms - wardrobes beds etc, is there any rules i have to follow when doing this.

im semi retired and this is something i like doing and a local shop have came to an agreement to sell them for me

im not really looking to make this into a multimillion pound business as i dont make much from them but i dont have that much experiance, any info would be great

the items i make are very strong and sturdy but i dont know if i need to build them in a certain way

thanks

Well it sounds like the store is taking them on consignment which is great because you love making the furniture. The more you make your furniture the more fine tuned you will be at it. As long as they are sturdy, strong and well made you shouldn't have any problems. Just make sure you have a contract with the store so if something comes up you will be protected. Before signing the contract, maybe you could have a local lawyer look it over to make sure the basics are covered. Since these are handmade items, there is no manufactured guidelines to follow.

i would think that there are rules regarding lead content in the paint (a la china), and safety standards like pieces that can't be swallowed, or broken off and swollowed or pose a cut/slice hazard or something. but i'm sure there is some ministry that has some basics rules you can get.

i would suggest you personally chair all the meetings, and table and bench all the motions,

as this is serious question all I can suggest is that you contact the British safety standard and get the most up to date
safety regulations they would be more than willing to help and good luck in your venture I admire anyone who has a skill and uses it

RULE 1 WATCH WOODWORM

Am guessing this is a new industry
for you. IF so, seek PT employment
in the field for at least 1 yr.

that way, you will learn both the laws,
the industry needs, the customer
habits and more!
